A former contestant of Married at First Sight (MAFS) has shared crucial insights for those considering participating in the reality TV phenomenon. The participant emphasised the importance of personal time and self-care, suggesting that contestants should not neglect their mental and physical health amid the pressures of filming.
Reflecting on her experience, she stated, “It’s a very testing environment, and you don’t know who you’re going to be with. You need to make sure that you’re on top form.” She highlighted her commitment to self-care practices, including journaling, which she described as a significant part of her journey. “I did so much journaling. I think that’s the most I’ve ever done in my life,” she revealed.
In response to questions about the constant scrutiny of being filmed, the former contestant acknowledged the challenge of balancing personal well-being with the demands of the show. “Yes, you have one day a week off from filming, but in my personal journey, I was only there for three weeks. I had quite a lot of downtime,” she explained. However, this downtime often depended on the filming schedule, which meant her freedom was not entirely on her own terms.
When discussing her authenticity while on camera, she noted the initial pressure she felt as a first-time TV participant. “I work with kids, so I was very aware of the children watching,” she said. She aimed to present the best version of herself, noting, “I was myself, but perhaps a more angelic version.” This conscious effort was compounded by her awareness of how her actions might reflect on her partner’s family and friends.
The participant recalled receiving advice before joining the show, particularly about the emotional highs and lows she might encounter. “I went on this show with no expectation for who I was going to marry; I just thought he was going to be the love of my life,” she said, adding that she visualised her partner, Matt, even before they met.
Reflecting on her favourite moments, she highlighted her connection with Matt as a significant positive. “It’s a beautiful story, such a happy ending,” she said, recalling fond memories of their wedding and a luxurious stay in the Maldives. “Those memories aren’t tainted for me. I will always remember them.”
Regarding the emotional toll of the experience, she discussed feelings of guilt about certain events that led to their departure from the show. However, she recognised that speaking out and engaging in therapy had been instrumental in her healing process. “I went on the biggest self-love journey of my life,” she remarked, stressing the importance of self-worth and resilience.
For future contestants, she advised maintaining an open heart and mind while also protecting oneself. “You could truly meet the love of your life and some incredible friends,” she noted. However, she stressed the need for self-care and remembering one’s life outside the show. “Have a level of protection for yourself and keep up with your self-care,” she concluded, offering a reminder to cherish the love and support from home.
