Students from Leeds College of Building have partnered with renowned artist Nicolas Dixon to create a striking football-themed mural at the GOALS soccer centre in Kirkstall. The large-scale artwork, which took two weeks to complete, was designed to transform a blank wall in the centre’s shooting area.
The project was undertaken by an all-female group of City & Guilds Level 1 Painting & Decorating Diploma students, who volunteered their time despite challenging weather conditions. The initiative was made possible through the college’s long-standing relationship with GOALS and was aimed at providing students with valuable hands-on experience.
Inspiration and Collaboration
Leeds College of Building’s Enrichment Manager, Denis Metcalf, explained that GOALS had initially proposed the idea for a mural to enhance their facilities. Given the creative nature of the project, the college reached out to Leeds-born artist Nicolas Dixon, known for his distinctive work at locations including Leeds Kirkgate Market, Trinity Shopping Centre, and LUFC’s Elland Road.
Nicolas, who previously worked in the building trade before becoming an artist, was keen to support the initiative and share his expertise with the students. The mural’s design incorporates themes of football and the Leeds cityscape, blending seamlessly with Dixon’s signature abstract style.
“The students got so much out of this,” said Metcalf. “Nick’s attitude is that anything is possible, and he understands that talent is often discovered by trying new things with an open mind. This was an incredible experience for them, learning teamwork skills and contributing to something that will be seen by thousands each year.”
Overcoming Challenges and Showcasing Talent
Despite freezing temperatures on some days, the students worked tirelessly to complete the project. Their efforts were praised by Leeds College of Building Painting & Decorating Lecturer John Stevenson.
“The students conducted themselves brilliantly and did an amazing job,” he said. “They volunteered their time outside of lessons, and the final result speaks for itself. It was fantastic to see them put their creativity on display – they should be really proud.”
Artist Nicolas Dixon echoed these sentiments, applauding the students for their dedication. “The conditions were some of the coldest I’ve ever painted in, and it takes real character to show up and work through that. As the project progressed, you could see their confidence and creativity grow. They’ve helped create something that will be on display for years to come.”
A Lasting Impact
GOALS has already received positive feedback from visitors, with customers regularly commenting on the vibrant artwork.
A spokesperson for the centre said: “We are thrilled with how the kick wall looks. The mural has transformed the space, and we’re now incorporating it into our kids’ parties. The students should be incredibly proud of their work.”
The project coincides with Colleges Week, which highlights the impact of further education institutions on local communities. With this year’s theme focusing on breaking down barriers to opportunity, Leeds College of Building is celebrating the role of practical learning in shaping future careers.
