The research conducted by Class Central, a platform that aggregates online courses, assessed the frequency of career-related hashtags on the social media platform to establish its rankings.
The study highlights the growing influence of social media on job aspirations, particularly in the modelling sector. Hashtags like #Modellife and #Modelagency have gained significant traction, reflecting how platforms like Instagram have transformed the industry and reshaped its appeal to younger generations. Over the past few years, social media has revitalised modelling, paving the way for a new breed of influencers and models who leverage their online presence to secure brand partnerships.
Following closely behind in the rankings is “artist,” with over 345 million career-related hashtags. This surge in interest mirrors recent findings from a BBC Bitesize Careers survey, where “artist” made its debut in the top ten most popular jobs for teenagers. Instagram has become a vital tool for artists, enabling them to showcase their work and connect with a broader audience, thus cultivating a supportive digital community.
The role of “photographer” ranks third with 268 million posts, showcasing how photography has thrived through social media. Many photographers use these platforms to present their portfolios, market their services, and engage with potential clients. Meanwhile, “makeup artist” claims the fourth spot, accumulating over 149 million posts. The makeup industry has harnessed social media as a powerful marketing tool, allowing artists to highlight their skills, stay abreast of trends, and interact directly with their clientele.

“Singer” ranks seventh with 70 million posts, highlighting the impact of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok on the music industry. These platforms have become pivotal in launching new talent and setting music trends. “Personal trainer” follows in eighth place, with over 58 million posts. The fitness industry has capitalised on social media, driving various global fitness trends and encouraging Gen Z to pursue careers in fitness.
“Actor” secures the ninth spot, with 52 million posts, as many aspiring actors leverage social media to document their journeys and offer career advice to followers. Rounding out the top ten is “influencer,” which has over 50 million posts. This profession has captivated younger generations due to its engaging nature and lucrative brand partnerships.
Interestingly, traditional professions such as “doctor” and “lawyer” appear much lower in the rankings, with “doctor” at 25th and “lawyer” at 34th. However, roles like “writer,” “YouTuber,” and “fashion designer” remain popular among young job seekers.
