Türkiye’s application for EU recognition of döner kebab as a traditional product has faced resistance from Germany. In response, Bereket Döner, a key figure in Turkish cuisine, has unveiled a detailed academic study supporting the Turkish origins of the dish.
Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner presented its findings, aiming to counter Germany’s objections and advocate for Türkiye’s cultural heritage.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, combines historical engravings, documents, and Ottoman artefacts to highlight döner’s cultural and historical significance.
A Culinary Tradition of Unity
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir commented. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner also announced plans to expand its Döner Point chain across Europe, starting with new outlets in Germany, as part of its mission to share authentic Turkish flavours with a wider audience.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” added Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Through its initiatives, Bereket Döner aims to safeguard the legacy of döner kebab while fostering greater appreciation of its cultural and culinary significance worldwide.
