Aldi has been named the supermarket with the best value own-brand products in the UK, according to new research conducted by saving experts at BravoVoucher.co.uk. The analysis of 15 items from each of the UK’s major supermarkets revealed that Aldi offers the most competitive prices, with an overall cost of £5.64.
The research evaluated various products, including staples such as brown bread, butter, beans, and milk, comparing prices per 100g, litre, or item. Aldi’s affordability shone through as it outperformed competitors on seven of the 15 items assessed.
Notably, Aldi’s brown bread is priced at just £0.06 per 100g, while a tin of beans costs £0.07 per 100g. Most impressively, Aldi’s sliced cheese is available for £0.70, significantly undercutting other retailers by £0.30.
Following closely behind Aldi is Asda, which came in second with an overall cost of £6.92. Asda’s Just Essentials range aims to provide customers with budget-friendly options. Among its best-value products are a tin of soup for £0.14, cordial at £0.63 per litre, and tea bags priced at £0.46 per 100g, all cheaper than those offered by its rivals.
Tesco secured the third position with an overall cost of £7.25. The supermarket provides a diverse range of own-brand products, including Hearty Food Co. and Creamfields. Tesco’s competitively priced items include brown bread at £0.09 per 100g, pasta sauce at £0.14 per 100g, and sliced ham for £1.00 per 100g.
Morrisons and Sainsbury’s ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, with costs of £7.43 and £7.51. Morrisons’ Savers range has helped lower prices on essential items, such as a tin of beans at £0.10 per 100g and eggs priced at £0.31 each. Sainsbury’s launched its Stamford Street own-brand range in 2023, with affordable options like white bread at £0.09 per 100g and milk at £0.64 per litre.
The Co-op, known as The Co-operative, ranked sixth with an overall cost of £9.72, offering sliced ham at £1.00 per 100g and butter at £0.51 per 100g. M&S, recognised for its quality but higher prices, came last with an overall cost of £14.94. While M&S offers a range of cuisines, its cheapest items include eggs at £0.33 each and a tin of beans at £0.13 per 100g.
Marco Farnararo, CEO and Co-Founder of BravoVoucher.co.uk, commented on the findings: “Own-label products are increasingly popular as shoppers look for ways to save money amid economic uncertainty. The cost-of-living crisis has prompted many to choose budget-friendly own-brand products over leading brands. While Aldi currently leads the own-brand market, other supermarkets are innovating and enhancing their offerings to remain competitive.”
As the cost of living continues to rise, savvy shoppers are likely to consider switching to own-brand products, which could lead to significant savings without compromising on quality.
