Meet Team buzz: Lorna
What’s your role within buzz Manchester Health & Wellbeing Service?
I’m a Public Health & Engagement Librarian and I’m part of the Knowledge Service (KS) team. I find research and evidence to support the work the buzz Neighbourhood Health Workers and Physical Activity Referral Service do. I’m working on ways to extend this support across Manchester. I also do work increasing awareness of health information literacy and promoting the use of high quality health information across Manchester.
Describe a typical day at work…
To use the old chestnut, every day is different in my role. One thing that might surprise people is that, although I’m a librarian, I don’t work with books much at all.
A typical activity is searching for and sending information. The buzz team will ask me to find information on a topic e.g. telephone befriending services. I will find research and information on this from a range of online sources: from Google to specialist health databases. I’ll collect all those information links together and send them back in a single document.
I’ll try do some sort of outreach activity, whether it’s attending a virtual meeting with different community groups or planning how to market the service.
Since lockdown, there’s now usually a discussion on how to deliver support virtually. Because of the COVID pandemic, the way the KS supports people is changing. It’s an exciting time as we figure out how to provide training and other services online.
What do you love most about your job?
The buzz team – they’re an amazing group of people to work with. I really like that my work supports health and wellbeing and mental health as I’m really passionate about both.
If you had to do another job for one day what would you pick?
Probably teaching children to write stories or poems. They have amazing imaginations where anything is possible and always surprise you with their ideas.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Well like a lot of librarians I love to read :-P I write stories and poems as well. I love playing squash, doing yoga and going on bike rides. I’ve found a lot more cycling routes during lockdown!
What’s your favourite thing about Manchester?
The diversity. You meet people from all walks of life in Manchester. It’s got something for everyone and will open your eyes to so many things you’ve never seen or heard of before.
