Meet Team buzz: Ben
What’s your role within buzz Manchester Health & Wellbeing Service?
Alongside Brian and Dina, I am a Neighbourhood Health Worker within the Start Well Develop Well team. My role involves facilitating community development within the neighborhoods of Manchester, with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of our children and families. I am lucky enough to work across the central locality which includes the wards of: Ardwick and Longsight, Chorlton, Whalley Range and Fallowfield, Gorton and Levenshulme, as well as Hulme, Moss Side and Rusholme.
Describe a typical day at work…
I am fortunate as my days at work are incredibly varied. A large element of my role involves engaging with families and residents across our communities. This can be done in any number of venues (E.g. Surestart centres, community centres, churches or Mosques). This involves finding out what parents like about their community, what they enjoy doing with their family in the community and what they would like to see within their community to improve their health and wellbeing. Once parents and families have shared what they would like to see and what they want help in setting up, we will work with them to make it happen.
As a team, we also attend neighborhood meetings such as Surestart advisory boards and neighborhood partnerships. The great thing about attending these meetings is that we have the opportunity with our partners to ensure that children and families within our local communities are heard, supported and looked after. Furthermore, ourselves and our partners can share ideas and resources, giving us a better opportunity of supporting more families.
What do you love most about your job?
My Job is incredible! The opportunity to meet incredible families and then having an opportunity to be able to hear their incredible ideas and ambitions which aim to improve their community’s health and wellbeing, is awesome. The best bit is that I can take those ideas away and try to support the families/residents in making them happen! Whether that is facilitating a group/project to achieve something, supporting with initial funding or resources; or even just sharing information with commissioners who can hopefully do something at council level to make a difference; I am incredibly grateful that I am in a position to support them where I can possibly can.
If you had to do another job for one day what would you pick?
I would love to be a professional sportsman (if my talent would allow it!). The opportunity to play football for Blackburn Rovers or even cricket for Lancashire, would be incredible! However, if I only have one day, then surely I would have to represent the England national team at football! That would be epic!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
What sort of questions is that, work is my life! (I’m only joking 😊). Outside of work, I am a member of an amazing Gospel centered church called city church, which meets in the centre of Manchester every Sunday at 4.30 and 6.30pm. I am an avid sports fan, I will literally watch ANY sports if I had the time. I am a passionate Blackburn Rovers fan, which is both incredible and painstaking in equal measure. Finally, I enjoy participating in exercise in my spare time, whether that is football or running (on the odd occasion), I do enjoy getting out and about.
What’s your favourite thing about Manchester?
My favourite thing about Manchester is that it is connected to many wonderful surrounding places. Liverpool, Lancashire (Blackburn!), Calder Valley, the Peak District and Cheshire to the south; We are incredibly blessed that our world-renowned city has so much heritage, industry and culture on our doorstep. Get out and explore!
