Take A Seat Northmoor Community Association Launch

Northmoor Community Association

Earlier this week, on Monday 11th November, Northmoor Community Centre in Longsight held a launch event for their local Take A Seat campaign which aims to make communities better places for people to grow older. The idea behind Take A Seat is a simple but effective one, placing seating inside local shops, meaning older people can have a rest whilst they’re out spending time in the community. All shops involved in the campaign display a sticker in their window to let people passing by know they are an age friendly shop.

Northmoor Community Association are members of the Ardwick and Longsight Age Friendly Network, facilitated by buzz Manchester Health & Wellbeing Service. The Take A Seat campaign has been running for over five years and was initially delivered in Manchester by local housing provider, Southway Housing. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the challenges older residents may face when travelling around and being active citizens in the area they live. The campaign encourages local businesses to provide seating so that shoppers can have a rest when needed, and shines a light on the contribution older residents make in their local communities, creating a positive environment for this to grow.

Fiona Gallagher, Community Development and Volunteer Co-ordinator for Northmoor Community Association said: “The response has been really good, it's starting a conversation. Everyone has been talking about it and has been interested to know what it's all about. It's a social opportunity too, it's opening the door and getting people more involved in the community. We have a great community spirit here, we all look after each other which is really nice."

Northmoor Community Association are encouraging people to take part in the campaign, and looking for support from housing associations who may be able to provide seats for businesses. They will be sharing their experience of delivering the campaign at the next Age Friendly Network meeting for Ardwick and Longsight, if you’re interested in joining this network or finding out more about it please contact buzz Age Friendly Neighbourhood Health Worker Yasmin at Yasmin.Holgeth@gmmh.nhs.uk or call 07425 536 823.
