Meet Team buzz: Matt

Team buzz Matt

What’s your role within buzz Manchester Health & Wellbeing Service?

Within the buzz team I am a Neighbourhood Health Worker covering the areas of Ancoats, Beswick, Clayton and Openshaw. I work within these communities to help increase the participation of local people in order for them to take more control of their own health and wellbeing. This is achieved by helping them to identify skills they have, recognise what keeps them well, and then linking people or ideas into projects in order for these to turn into groups which the local community can use.

Describe a typical day at work...

The beautiful thing about this job is no one day is the same, that said I do have a set routine which pretty much starts at 8am, cup of coffee, red milk of course, and then onto checking emails in the morning whilst having a spot of banter with the team. By around 10am I’m out in the community where I could be at a Men’s group helping to plan an outdoor wellbeing garden activity, talking to local graffiti artists about an art project, helping to get funding for an age friendly crafts group, or simply meeting some really interesting people who live in the area with big or small ideas of how they want their area to look.

What do you love most about your job?

Before the recession of 2007 I was a tradesman, a tree surgeon and an electrician to be precise. I enjoyed both of these jobs as I was working with my mates, having a laugh and driving a massive manly truck. But coming into the NHS in 2009 was a game changer for me, as clichéd as it sounds working with people rather than for people is so much more rewarding.

I love the random encounters I have with local people, listening to them talk about their lives and hearing their hopes and dreams. The local residents make this job what it is.

If you had to do another job for one day what would you pick?

If I am being honest I rather like being the centre of attention. Giving a TED Talk about my life, being married to a Thai national and having land in Hua Hin, with a guest speaker like Zhang Ziyi, would be a great job.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy using my home gym, cooking, socialising with friends and buying old 90s video games. I own both UK and US copies of Snatcher for the SEGA CD.
