Buzz Mental Health Guides

Our popular buzz NHS Mental Health Guides have been available to read, download and print on our website for a couple of weeks now and we've already had almost 500 guides downloaded! It's great to see our guides are as popular as ever, covering a wide variety of mental health topics from dealing with depression and understanding personality disorders to managing anxiety.

There are 12 guides in total, six of which are also available in a physical format from the buzz Knowledge Service at Fallowfield Library. If you work in health and social care in Manchester you're welcome to pick up a limited number of these from the library. Find out more about these seven topics below with a quick tip from each of the guides to get you started...

Unwind Your Mind - A guide on how to manage anxiety and worry

"Negative thoughts will make your anxiety worse. If you think negatively about situations you will feel more anxious or worried and you may start to see danger where there is none. You can find out more about unhelpful thinking styles further on in the guide.

You might try to look after yourself by avoiding a stressful situation, but if you avoid things that you fear you will never have the opportunity to realise there was nothing to worry about."

Five Ways to Wellbeing - A guide to improving your mental wellbeing

"Good mental wellbeing can help you to live a longer, happier and healthier life. When you face tough times you are able to cope. This is called having resilience. Building your mental wellbeing and being resilient can even reduce your risk of having poor mental health. Even if you are living with poor mental health or a diagnosed mental health problem, it is possible to have good mental wellbeing, to have strong resilience and to live well with the condition."

Improve Your Mood - A guide to managing low mood and depression

"The first step to recovering from low mood and depression is to recognise the unhelpful behaviours that you are doing to cope better and find ways to reduce them.

There are many different things that people will do to cope with low mood and depression. Often people stop doing things that they used to enjoy. They might not feel like going out with friends because they feel down so they become withdrawn and less sociable. It is also common to put off jobs, make excuses, drink more alcohol and comfort eat."

Build Yourself Up - A guide to building your self-esteem

"Negative thoughts can make life feel like hard work. When things become tough, people with low self-esteem can find it hard to cope and ask for help which can increase the risk of poor mental health.

Having low self-esteem can make it tougher for people to overcome everyday problems and as a result they are less likely to look after themselves which can affect their health and wellbeing."

Keep Safe - Let's talk about self-harm

"It can be difficult to talk about self-harm with other people but it is important not to suffer in silence. People often hide self-harm because they feel ashamed which can get in the way of asking for help, but self-harm is not something to be ashamed of.

Getting support to manage the reasons for the difficult feelings and discovering different ways of coping can help you to overcome self-harm."

Sleep Well - A guide to how you can get a better night's sleep

"Give up trying to sleep. It will keep you awake. It can annoy you because you don’t succeed. The harder you try to sleep the less likely it will happen. Try not to worry about how your lack of sleep will affect you. The more you think about it, the harder it will be to fall asleep.

You can use the relaxation skills in this guide to help you to switch off in bed. They will help your body to relax. They also give your mind something to do."
