Chinese solar giant LONGi has achieved an ‘A-‘ Leadership Level score for Water Security, according to the 2024 CDP environmental rankings, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability efforts. The score places LONGi at the top of China’s renewable energy and photovoltaic (PV) industry for water resource management. Additionally, the company has maintained a ‘B’ Management Level score for Climate Change for the second consecutive year, reflecting its ongoing commitment to environmental governance.
The CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is a global non-profit organisation that provides an independent environmental disclosure system, helping businesses, governments, and cities manage their environmental impacts. Its annual report assesses companies on three key themes: climate change, forests, and water security. These scores are critical in shaping investment decisions and procurement strategies and play a key role in promoting corporate responsibility and transparency in environmental practices.
This year, the CDP report highlighted that six out of ten countries worldwide are at risk of facing unsustainable water use by 2050. In response to this pressing challenge, LONGi has placed a significant emphasis on sustainable water management and climate action. The company has developed a water resource management policy based on environmental compliance, prioritisation of water savings, and scientific governance.
LONGi conducts an annual review of its water usage across all global manufacturing facilities, referencing the World Resources Institute’s (WRI) water risk atlas to assess potential risks. The company uses this data to set ambitious water conservation targets, actively working to minimise its environmental footprint.
In 2023, LONGi implemented 118 water-saving process projects across its operations, which led to an impressive annual water saving of 5.53 million tonnes. This initiative resulted in a 12.75% reduction in overall water consumption compared to the previous year, and a 33.52% decrease compared to the company’s baseline. LONGi’s continued focus on resource efficiency and its active pursuit of alternative water sources have contributed to this success, positioning it as a leader in corporate water stewardship.
Since 2020, LONGi has consistently participated in CDP’s Climate Change and Water Security questionnaires, and its efforts have now been recognised with the ‘Leadership Level’ rating for water security. The company is determined to build on this achievement and drive further progress in its sustainability goals.
A representative from LONGi stated: “We recognise the urgency of addressing water scarcity and climate change. Our continued investment in sustainable practices ensures that we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also encouraging others to follow suit. We will continue to work together with stakeholders, customers, and investors to foster a sustainable future.”
LONGi’s commitment to transparent environmental disclosure and its focus on sustainable development align with the growing demand for businesses to contribute to the global effort to tackle climate change and resource depletion. With its leadership in water security and ongoing focus on climate change management, LONGi is positioning itself as a key player in the global transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy.
