A new report by UX Connect has revealed that owners of large-screen foldable phones are increasingly using their tablets and laptops less. The study, which examines user behaviours surrounding foldable devices, highlights that the larger screen size of these phones is providing users with a more versatile experience, making it easier to replace traditional devices like tablets.
The report indicates that foldable phones, particularly those with larger screens, offer a more convenient option for tasks such as video watching, gaming, productivity, and multi-tasking. Many users find that their foldable phones provide a much better experience than smaller, non-foldable devices, which often struggle to deliver similar functionality.
Size Key Factor in Foldable Phone Purchases
The size of the device plays a crucial role in the decision-making process for potential foldable phone buyers. According to the study, compact foldable owners tend to purchase these devices for their small and discreet form factor, making them easy to carry around. On the other hand, owners of larger foldable models are drawn to the increased screen size they offer when unfolded, which allows for a more expansive and immersive experience, yet retains the portability of a phone.
The report also pointed to a key concern among foldable phone owners: the durability of the device’s screen and hinge. Many users have reported issues with the screen crease or hinge becoming unreliable or breaking over time. This issue remains a significant challenge for manufacturers, who will need to address these reliability concerns in future iterations of foldable phones.
Room for Improvement
Paul Brown, Head of Research at UX Connect and author of the report, commented: “While foldable phones offer great potential in terms of productivity and entertainment, the reliability of the screen crease and hinge remains a major concern for users. Manufacturers need to focus on improving the durability and longevity of these key components to enhance the overall user experience.”
Despite these issues, foldable phones continue to attract a growing number of users, with the larger screen offering undeniable advantages over traditional smartphones, tablets, and laptops. As technology advances, it is likely that foldable devices will become a more common and reliable option for users looking for the best of both portability and performance.
