Waters Corporation, a global leader in analytical instruments, has officially opened a new 45,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at Longbridge Business Park in the West Midlands. The site, which more than triples the company’s previous operations, aims to enhance production capacity for critical components used in its cutting-edge mass spectrometry systems.
The new facility represents a significant investment in the region, showcasing Waters’ commitment to expanding its manufacturing capabilities in the UK. These systems play a pivotal role in scientific research, serving chemists and analysts in life sciences, food safety, environmental studies, and materials science.
Chris Ross, Senior Vice President of Global Operations at Waters, highlighted the importance of the new site:
“The opening of our Longbridge facility is an important next step for Waters and our employees, providing a modern, fit-for-purpose space to support their innovative and critical work. This state-of-the-art precision engineering centre expands our footprint in the region while creating a highly desirable working environment to support growth and the potential for additional skilled jobs.”
David Clay, British Consul General to New England, welcomed the investment:
“This investment brings new jobs and innovative precision engineering technology into the West Midlands, a region renowned for industrial innovation. It also demonstrates confidence in UK talent within this sector. We look forward to seeing this facility have a lasting positive impact on the region.”
Sustainability at the Core
The Longbridge facility, constructed by St. Modwen with internal works by Briggs & Forrester Engineering Services, embodies Waters’ commitment to sustainability. The building adheres to BREEAM “Very Good” standards and holds an “A” Energy Performance Certificate. Its eco-friendly features include natural gas-free heating and hot water systems, alongside a temperature-controlled production environment enabling sub-micron precision in manufacturing.
Strengthening UK Manufacturing
Products made at the Longbridge site will support Waters’ Mass Spectrometry Centres of Excellence in Wilmslow, UK, and Wexford, Ireland. These components are essential for the mass spectrometry systems used worldwide.
The investment also underlines Waters’ role in supporting local economies and fostering innovation. By significantly increasing its manufacturing capacity, the company aims to strengthen the UK’s position as a global hub for advanced engineering and scientific research.
The facility is expected to bolster regional employment, offering opportunities for skilled workers and positioning the West Midlands as a centre for cutting-edge manufacturing.
Waters’ new Longbridge plant highlights the company’s long-term vision of combining innovation, sustainability, and local investment.
