Nottingham-based Clegg Construction has been honoured as the ‘Contractor of the Year’ at the 2024 East Midlands Bricks Awards. The annual awards, organised by East Midlands Business Link Magazine, spotlight exceptional companies, projects, and individuals who contribute to the region’s built environment and development.
The award was presented at a ceremony held on 3rd October at Trent Bridge County Cricket Club. Clegg Construction’s Managing Director, Michael Sims, expressed his pride in the recognition, noting the company’s longstanding presence in Nottingham city centre and its substantial influence on the East Midlands’ landscape. “Clegg is a 92-year-old company whose head office has been based in Nottingham city centre for over 25 years. We dedicate this award to our teams and partners, whose unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service is fundamental to the company’s continued success,” Sims said.
Established nearly a century ago, Clegg Construction has a history of delivering large-scale projects in partnership with notable regional entities, including the University of Nottingham, Rolls-Royce, Derby City Council, and Nottingham Trent University. Among its flagship works is the UK’s first BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ laboratory, part of a broad portfolio that spans student housing, residential complexes, and public facilities.
The company’s recent projects include the construction of new and refurbished teaching facilities at Carlton le Willows Academy in Nottingham, a careful modernisation of the historic Florence Boot Hall at the University of Nottingham, and the design and construction of Middleton Lodge Care Home in Littleover, Derbyshire.
Currently, Clegg Construction is working with Vision West Nottinghamshire College on an £8.8m Future Tech Skills and Knowledge Exchange at its Chesterfield Road campus. Due for completion next year, the centre is expected to provide critical training for students entering advanced industries and serve as a collaboration hub with Nottingham Trent University to support technological advancements in the local workforce. This initiative aims to address regional skills shortages and promote well-paid employment opportunities in Mansfield and beyond.
Beyond project delivery, Clegg Construction places significant emphasis on community engagement and social impact. Over the past year, the company has facilitated student work placements from local institutions, such as the University of Nottingham and Rushcliffe Academy, and has collaborated with organisations like South Nottinghamshire Academy and Action for Construction to inspire future construction professionals.
Clegg’s commitment to social responsibility also extends to environmental initiatives through its parent company, Clegg Group Ltd, which recently established a Group Charity Fund. Beneficiaries include Nottingham Men Allowed, a community singing initiative supporting Prostate Cancer UK, and the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, with whom Clegg has partnered to further environmental sustainability in the region.
Headquartered in Nottingham’s historic Lace Market district, Clegg Construction serves clients across the Midlands, East Anglia, and Yorkshire, providing expertise for a wide range of public and private sector projects.
