Northern Stage, the largest producing theatre in the North East, has unveiled the cast and creative team for its upcoming reimagining of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, A Christmas Carol, set to open in Newcastle upon Tyne in November 2024.
The production promises a festive experience with a fresh take on the tale of Scrooge, who is described as “meaner and greedier than ever.” Running from 30 November to 4 January, this adaptation, crafted by Karen Louise Hebden and directed by Northern Stage’s artistic director Natalie Ibu, aims to infuse the traditional story with festive magic, music, and merriment. An international cast will bring to life elements of circus and illusion, featuring spectacular ghosts designed to delight both children and adults alike.
Audiences will recognise iconic Newcastle landmarks as the narrative begins on Victorian Northumberland Street, before unfolding the timeless Christmas story that has enchanted generations.
Michael Hodgeson will reprise his role as Scrooge, having previously showcased his talents in productions such as The Pitmen Painters, Get Carter, and performances at the West End and Broadway. He will be joined by a remarkable cast, including Gigi Noel-King, a London-based actress who made her West End debut in Harry Potter and The Cursed Child; Taku Mutero, whose credits include The Prophetic Soul and Salome; and Malik Ibheis, a versatile performer from Düsseldorf, Germany, with experience in mime and physical theatre. Ibheis has appeared in productions such as The School for Good and Evil and Worzel Gummidge.
Natalie Ibu expressed her excitement about the production, stating, “This story is one that so many of us know and love, and I can’t wait to share it with young people and their grown-ups from across the North East. I hope they leave with their hearts full of festive cheer.”
Ibu also highlighted the collaboration with a talented team from the North East and beyond, promising an enchanting stage filled with circus acts, illusions, and a heartwarming narrative as Scrooge embarks on his journey of redemption.
In a commitment to accessibility, Northern Stage’s Pay It Forward campaign will enable over 2,000 young people, who might otherwise miss out, to experience A Christmas Carol. The initiative aims to spread creativity and joy across the region, inviting school groups and local youths to attend.
Moreover, in alignment with the Theatre Green Book, which promotes sustainability in the arts, Northern Stage is committed to reducing its environmental impact. For this production, set and costume designer Debbie Duru has transformed and repurposed costumes and set pieces from previous shows, as well as salvaged vintage items. Duru has set an ambitious goal that 75 percent of the materials used will have had a previous life and will be repurposed after the show.
Ibu added, “I’ve been so impressed with Debbie’s skill and creativity in transforming and repurposing items from previous Northern Stage productions.”
Tickets for A Christmas Carol are now available, with a special promotion allowing audiences to receive a free child’s ticket with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket for selected performances.
